About the Pastor

 

Reverend Wayne K. Bumbry is currently the Pastor of Le Detroit Baptist Church in Oxon Hill, MD.
He was licensed to preach in 1968, ordained in 1971, and began his pastorate at the First
Ashville Baptist Church in Marshall, Virginia.

For twenty years, Reverend Bumbry served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, where he supervised and managed commands in California, Georgia and North Carolina. During his tenure in the military, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Humanitarian Service Award, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Award, Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. He retired from the Navy in 1997.

Also in 1997, Reverend Bumbry was called by the founding pastor of Le Detroit Baptist Church, the late Reverend Cortez Davis, to serve as Assistant Pastor, to help further the ministry within the Le Detroit church family. He was installed as Pastor of Le Detroit in March, 1999.

Reverend Bumbry brings many God-given gifts and talents to the ministry, including motivational speaking and facilitation, and experience in teaching, training and counseling individuals and organizations. He has served as a Life Skills consultant and religious educator, and has been able to apply his knowledge to assist youth groups, families and individuals in the attainment of their goals. He has conducted workshops on a wide range of subjects including Personal Development, Stress Management, and Communication/Relationship Management.

He serves on the Board of Directors of the Collective Empowerment Group, and is a member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, where he was honored as the Chaplain of the Year in 1996. He is also a member of The Missionary Baptist Ministers Conference of Washington, D.C. and Vicinity, and the Southern Baptist Convention. .

Born in King George County, VA, Reverend Bumbry is the only child of the late Mrs. Ruby E. Davis and the late Reverend Irving L. Bumbry. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA, and a Master of Divinity degree from INTER-MET Theological Seminary/Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Reverend Bumbry is married to Mrs. Tomeka C. Bumbry, and they are the proud parents of one son, Wayne Christopher.
